On Air

Welcome to the blog of the Documentary School of Astrophotography. We launch today two parallel projects: the Documentary School of Astrophotography (DSA) and the astrophotographic work at Calar Alto Observatory.

The DSA is a conceptual photography school that has been created by an international team of astrophotographers , all of them having a common concept about astrophotography. The school’s main hope is to serve of inspiration to the astrophotographic community, as well as a guide to the newcomer astrophotographer.

Astrophotography is mainly documentary photography of celestial objects. This means that the astrophotographer’s work must respect, above all, the acquired data and the nature of the objects photographed. Astrophotography and science divulgation through images begin from this point.

The first DSA project is an astrophotographic work at Calar Alto observatory with the support of RECTA, an organization for the science divulgation based in Andalusia, Spain (www.cienciadirecta.com).

This work is being done mainly with the 1.23 meter Zeiss telescope. Our first image is the planetary nebula Messier 97 in Ursa Major, a photography done through narrow band filters with a total exposure time of 5 hours. You can read the Calar Alto photo release. Also you can read some processing notes in the PixInsight blog.

The whole DSA team hopes that you enjoy this image, and that this work will change your particular vision of this beautiful nebula.

Congratulations! It is indeed a beautiful image, and also a beautiful idea. Congratulations also to the institutions involved, for facilitating this project.

This is without a doubt the most detailed image of M 97 The Owl Nebula I have been able to find on the web. Previous APODs do not compare

  3. Congratulations, Vicent! The Owl Nebula Image is the best inspiration for our school. Perhaps is necessary a new name for the nebula, because the owl is missing
