The second DSA work at Calar Alto Observatory is the Ring Nebula (Messier 57):
This is our first serious work, and it means our first time at doing real astrophotography with professional equipment. We have organized our own observing nights, decided the framing, the filters to use, and the exposure time.
This work is the result of many observing nights from July to September, and the total exposure time is more than 21 hours.
We do think this new vision is also a very complete vision of the object. What makes this image special from any other version of the Ring Nebula is the integration of the infrared image into the visual one. The outlining molecular hidrogen envelope makes this image very informative to the public, as well as letting the public a new aesthetic experience.
The image processing of the photo has been conducted to enhance the hidrogen structures. Not only in the inner ring, but also in the outer halo. This is why we introduced part of the red channel in the luminance (while preserving structure hues).
Also we are very happy to achieve a near space based telescope resolution with these small sized telescopes (to modern standard sizes). Be sure to visit Vicent Peris’ notes at PixInsight Blogs for a direct comparison between our image and the Hubble’s one.
